History of the NPC&TC ... part 3

Miss Gurney had a special affection for St Andrews, as the Convalescent and Treatment Centre was called and she made it her headquarters and home until she died after a long illness on the 11th August 1930 aged 82 years.

St Andrews continued in its supporting role of providing a place of rest and convalescence to Police Officers. In the early 1970’s, it was realised that rest and recuperation were no longer sufficient and the provision of physiotherapy began. Initially, the services were bought in but in 1978 it was decided to provide a treatment centre and professional staff to carry out treatment “in house”.

An appeal was launched to fund the building of a hydrotherapy pool, physiotherapy department and gymnasium with the target being quickly reached and, in 1979, this new facility was opened. The benefits of a treatment centre quickly became apparent and it was necessary to increase and improve the accommodation.
