The literal meaning of ‘arthritis’ is “inflammation of the joint(s)”. This literal translation could therefore be applied to most joint problems where inflammation is a component.

There are, however, over 200 different kinds of arthritis affecting all ages from children upwards. Some will live a natural course and relieve the sufferer eventually, whilst others will be a lifelong complication.
