The
majority of patients attending the Northern Police Convalescent and Treatment
Centres at Harrogate and Aucherarder do so to receive intensive physiotherapy.
Each patient is thoroughly assessed by a physiotherapist on arrival
at the centres so as a tailored package of treatment can be developed.
Treatment often includes active and passive exercises and postural education.
The department takes a proactive approach to treatment but the emphasis
is on helping patients to help themselves; patients are encouraged to
participate in education and exercise classes and make good use of the
facilities, including the hydrotherapy pool and multi-gym. Such work
is carefully guided.
Education is an important part of the work of our physiotherapists,
who aim to promote self-management and a better understanding of anatomy,
injury prevention and maintenance of good health.
All of the physiotherapists at the Northern Police Convalescent and
Treatment Centres endeavour to remain up-to-date with current clinical
evidence and new treatments. To that end, acupuncture is now offered
(where appropriate) at both centres.
